voice change rules (Active ↔ Passive Voice)

 

Simple Present Tense

Rule:
Active: Subject + V1 + Object
Passive: Object + is/am/are + V3 + (by + subject)

Examples:

She writes a letter.

A letter is written by her.

They play football.

Football is played by them.

He drinks tea.

Tea is drunk by him.

I read books.

Books are read by me.

The chef cooks food.

Food is cooked by the chef.

He sings a song.

A song is sung by him.

We clean the room.

The room is cleaned by us.

She paints the wall.

The wall is painted by her.

They help the poor.

The poor are helped by them.

I wash the car.

The car is washed by me.

 

2. Present Continuous Tense

Rule:
Active: Subject + is/am/are + V1+ing + Object
Passive: Object + is/am/are + being + V3 + (by + subject)

Examples:

He is drinking tea.

3. Simple Past Tense

Rule:
Active: Subject + V2 + Object
Passive: Object + was/were + V3 + (by + subject)

4. Past Continuous Tense

5. Present Perfect Tense

Rule:
Active: Subject + has/have + V3 + Object
Passive: Object + has/have + been + V3 + (by + subject)

6. Future Simple Tense

Rule:
Active: Subject + will/shall + V1 + Object
Passive: Object + will/shall + be + V3 + (by + subject)

7. Modal Verbs (Can, Should, May, etc.)

Rule:
Active: Subject + modal + V1 + Object
Passive: Object + modal + be + V3 + (by + subject)

 Examples:

He may drink milk.

Milk may be drunk by him.
