What Are Static and Dynamic Verbs?

1. Static (Stative) Verbs

  • Describe a state, condition, emotion, opinion, or possession.
  • These verbs are not used in continuous (–ing) tenses.
  • Example:

1. I am knowing the answer.WRONG

2. I know the answer. RIGHT

 Common Uses of Stative Verbs

  • Feelings/emotions: love, hate, like, prefer
  • Mental states: know, believe, understand, forget
  • Possession: have, own, belong
  • Senses (when not physical actions): see, hear, smell
  • Existence/appearance: seem, be, look (when describing state)

  • Mental action: think, learn, study (in action context)
  • Activities that change or involve movement
